High Functioning Depression: Smiling Outside, Struggling Inside

OBJECTIVE:

On 25 June, UCSI Student Development & Counselling Department  hosted “High Functioning Depression: Smiling Outside, Struggling Inside”, featuring Dr. Syed Anwar Husain, a trainee counsellor from Laurent Bleu Medical Clinic. The session raised awareness that depression is not always visible, as individuals who appear successful, cheerful, or highly functional may still be silently struggling with their mental health. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the signs, misconceptions, and importance of recognising emotional well-being beyond outward appearances.

The talk also emphasised the importance of reducing mental health stigma by encouraging empathy, open conversations, and early support-seeking. By fostering greater awareness and understanding, the session reminded participants that mental health is just as important as physical health, and that creating a supportive environment is essential in helping individuals feel heard, valued, and empowered to seek help when needed.
