WHY IT MATTERS?

Harmoni-Mesra is an initiative supporting the objectives of Rukun Negara (The National Principles) which in turn, is our national aspiration for a harmonious, prosperous, progressive and sustainable (HPPS) Malaysia.

It promotes unity through embracing the concepts of Diversity,  Equity, and Inclusion. These three concepts are distinct but interrelated, and they work together to create an environment of respect and fairness to achieve sustained harmony or Kesejahteraan Negara  in the campus.

The objectives of Rukun Negara are parallel to the SDG Goal 16: Peace and Justice. It calls for institutions to foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies which are free from fear and violence. There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development.

5 Principles

5 Objectives

The Rukun Negara’s importance is self-evident. However, objectives 1 and 4 remain unfulfilled after 67 years of independence. Society is becoming more tribal and divisive, putting strain on the fabric of Malaysian society. Sustained Harmony remains a dream, yet Harmoni-Mesra offers a path forward.

“Harmoni-Mesra is a guiding principle that fosters empathy and co-existence. And ultimately, it is a catalyst for unity in our multi-ethnic nation. At the heart of Harmoni-Mesra is the belief that Malaysians are stronger when they stand together.”
Dato’ Peter Ng
UCSI Founder and Executive Chairman
“We trust that imparting the values of respect, caring, sharing, and acceptance in youth is the best way to develop unity on campus from a young age. It's through initiatives like this that we can create a sense of togetherness and build a prosperous and developed nation.”
Professor Datuk Ir Ts Dr Siti Hamisah Binti Tapsir FASc
UCSI Group CEO and Vice-Chancellor of UCSI University
“Rukun Negara for me is our national aspiration for a harmonious, prosperous, progressive and sustainable (HPPS) Malaysia. The most important part is harmonious, without which you cannot have the other three components. Harmoni-Mesra is about addressing the Harmonious component to achieve HPPS. “
Academician Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr. Omar Abdul Rahman FASc

JOURNEY TO SUSTAINED HARMONY

The Journey to Sustained Harmony in the Harmoni-Mesra Campus is closely linked to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

DEI initiatives promote equal access, opportunity, and a sense of belonging for all regardless of race, background, culture and gender, including the underrepresented individuals. By embracing DEI, communities can leverage the power of diversity to drive growth, innovation, and ultimately achieve sustained harmony.

Three milestones of achieving sustained harmony:

Integration

Coming together, working together, teamwork for specific purpose: sports, celebrations, cultural events, gotong royong, open houses etc.

Cohesion

Principles and reasons for a longer-term bonding: cooperation, collaboration, partnership, security, stability, civility, survivality, and prosperity.

Unity

Full commitment, collective responsibility, loyalty, shared destiny, civic nationalism, patriotism.
