Global Sustainable Development Congress
OBJECTIVE:
From 22–25 June 2026, UCSI University participated in the Global Sustainable Development Congress held at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE), Jakarta, Indonesia. During the congress, Mr. Leong Sat Sing, Vice President, Group Sustainability Office, UCSI University, shared valuable insights on the importance of critically evaluating sustainability claims in an era where environmental messaging has become increasingly widespread.
The session encouraged participants to look beyond surface-level labels such as “biodegradable,” “eco-friendly,” “green building,” and “sustainably sourced.” Through practical examples—including biodegradable products that require industrial facilities for decomposition, tree-planting initiatives without long-term maintenance, and electric vehicles that still carry lifecycle carbon emissions—the discussion highlighted the importance of distinguishing genuine sustainability efforts from misleading environmental claims.
It also explored various forms of greenwashing, including GreenCrowding, GreenShifting, GreenLighting, GreenHushing, and GreenRinsing, encouraging participants to critically assess sustainability narratives with greater awareness. As sustainability continues to shape business and society, the ability to think critically is essential in making informed decisions and driving meaningful environmental action.
