Sustainable Organic Waste Management: From Composting to Predictive Modelling
OBJECTIVE:
On 26 June, the UCSI Office of Postgraduate Studies hosted a session titled “Sustainable Organic Waste Management: From Composting to Predictive Modelling”, presented by Dr. Lim Li Yee at the Postgraduate Studies and Alumni Lounge, Level 10, Block G. The session highlighted the importance of shifting from a traditional waste disposal mindset towards recognising organic waste as a valuable resource within a more sustainable and circular economy approach.
Participants were introduced to key principles of sustainable organic waste management, starting with waste reduction at source and proper segregation practices. The discussion also explored various treatment methods such as composting, anaerobic digestion, black soldier fly (BSF) treatment, and thermal recovery, depending on waste characteristics and recovery objectives. In addition, the session emphasised how predictive modelling and impact assessment can improve decision-making, enhance process efficiency, and reduce reliance on trial-and-error, ultimately supporting higher resource recovery, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and reduced landfill dependency.
