UCSI University fosters compassion through Golden Bonds outreach at Rumah Seri Kenangan
OBJECTIVE:
KUCHING (Nov 6): The Student Affairs and Alumni Department of UCSI University Sarawak Campus, in collaboration with the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Kuching, successfully organised The Golden Bonds Visiting Programme at Rumah Seri Kenangan here last month.
Held on Oct 25, the outreach initiative saw UCSI students and staff engaging in volunteer activities and presenting donations to the senior citizens’ home, with the aim of fostering compassion and encouraging a spirit of volunteerism among students.
In a statement yesterday, the university said the programme formed part of its continuous efforts to strengthen community engagement and social responsibility among its students.
Rumah Seri Kenangan principal Dayang Siti Nurshamira Awang Talip said the home currently accommodates about 70 residents, of whom around 30 took part in the activities alongside the staff.
“I was very happy to see the residents smile and actively participate. I hope more university students will continue visiting and organising future activities with our residents,” she said.
The programme began with a light exercise session, followed by creative art activities including colouring and paint-blowing designed to encourage expression and enhance emotional well-being.
A presentation of donations later took place, contributed by UCSI University staff, students, families, and friends, with additional support from Edon Pharmacy, one of the university’s merchant partners.
The donated items included daily necessities and food supplies to support the residents’ basic needs.
According to the statement, the initiative aligns with the university’s core values of integrity, humility, and excellence, while also supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on good health, well-being, and reducing inequalities.
“These volunteer initiatives provide invaluable companionship and emotional support to senior citizens, particularly those experiencing social isolation, while also nurturing empathy, communication skills and a deeper appreciation of community issues among students” it added.
UCSI University said it will continue to foster a culture of kindness, empathy, and community service — demonstrating how simple acts of compassion can make a lasting impact.
