Live Built: Bamboo Pavilion at SB Langkawi

OBJECTIVE:

The Langkawi Pavilion Project replaced the grandstand at Skate Bowl Park with a sustainable bamboo pavilion, emphasizing functionality, community engagement, and environmental responsibility. The design showcased bamboo as the primary material, highlighting its strength, flexibility, and sustainability.

Key collaborators ensured the project’s success: 1. Amirul Johan, founder of Skatebowl Langkawi, aligned the design with the skateboarding community’s needs, creating a functional and welcoming space. 2. Ir. Major Hj Ahmad Mazlan Othman, a bamboo specialist from Bamboo Shaper Langkawi, provided expertise in bamboo treatment and construction, ensuring the pavilion’s safety and durability. 3. Qamah Saedon of SAFF Design Work and Management ensured smooth project execution and integration into the park’s environment. Locally sourced bamboo was treated and crafted into a lightweight yet sturdy structure that offers shade and enhances the spectator experience. Students gained hands-on experience in bamboo construction, from preparation to assembly, learning sustainable practices under expert guidance. The pavilion now serves as a functional, visually striking replacement for the grandstand. It stands as a testament to bamboo’s potential in modern architecture and Langkawi’s commitment to sustainable design and innovative community spaces.
