“JunkBot” Engineering Product Design towards Sustainability
OBJECTIVE:
This workshop is designed to introduce SPM students to the exciting fields of engineering, product design, and sustainability through a hands-on project focused on building a DIY vacuum cleaner using recycled materials. Participants will explore the basics of sustainable design, learning how their choices in materials and processes can impact the environment. This project aims to teach students the fundamental principles of product design, engineering mechanics, and environmental stewardship in an engaging and practical way.
Throughout the workshop, students will learn how to identify, select, and repurpose everyday recyclable items to construct a functioning vacuum cleaner. By working through the engineering design process—from ideation and planning to construction and testing—students will gain insights into the skills and creativity needed to solve
real-world problems sustainably. This approach encourages critical thinking and teamwork, helping students understand the relevance of engineering in addressing modern environmental challenge.
