UCSI University held its first ever Sustainable Development Goals Conference (SDGC) on Tuesday, 27th March 2018, at their campus in Kuala Lumpur.

The conference was focused on introducing the concept of sustainable development goals (SDG) to student leaders of higher learning institutions in Malaysia, and to evaluate the readiness of Malaysia in meeting the goals of SDGs.

‘’As a leading private higher education institution in Malaysia, UCSI University is firmly committed to implementing SDG. This is why we have launched a series of events and activities like today’s conference to initiate the practice of SDG in tertiary level’’, the Vice-Chancellor and President of UCSI University, Senior Professor Dato’ Dr Khalid Yusof said during the opening of the conference.

The first-panel session discussed the current practices of SDG in Malaysia. The panel expressed that there is a need for strategic planning by the government and ministries to ensure that SDG is properly implemented, especially for natural resources.

Dr Ruslan Abdullah, the Director of Science and Environmental Division, Malaysia Palm Oil Council, shared that government agencies should work collaboratively and in partnership instead of creating new divisions.

He was accompanied by Gurmit Singh, advisor to the Environment Protection Society, Mohamad Razif Hj Abd Mubin, Director of Economic Planning Unit, Professor Dato’ Ir Dr Abu Bakar Jaafar, professor at Perdana School of Science, Technology & Innovation Policy, UTM and Dato’ Ahmad Ibrahim, Professor of Environmental Management, UCSI University.

The implications of SDG on talent, research, and business – preparing the universities was the topic discussed at the second-panel session.

Moderated by Professor Dr. Tajuddin Mohd Radsi of UCSI University, the panelist agreed that the practice of SDG can be cultivated by injecting values and compassion amongst the future generations.

‘’The introduction of the integrated cumulative grade point average (iCGPA) by the Ministry of Education will strongly encourage SDG.

This assessment will groom students to be more pro-active, to involve themselves in student activities which will eventually promote the values of SDG’’, mentioned Professor Dato’ Dr Mazlin Mokhtar.
